atlassian open devops
Brought the vision of a flexible, best-of-breed toolchain to life, shaping the strategy and user experience that powers thousands of teams using Jira alongside their favorite external tools.
about this project
-
The challenge
DevOps teams typically use around 20 different tools across the software development lifecycle. This fragmented toolchain often results in costly silos, lost productivity, and security risks. However, customers were loud and clear that no all-in-one solution, including ours, could possibly meet their teams’ unique needs. They needed a range of specific features without vendor lock-in.
-
The solution
We introduced Open DevOps in response to this quandary. It began as a bundle of pre-connected Atlassian tools: Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Opsgenie. This alone saved hours spent on configuration. Customers were then able to easily add or swap out Atlassian tools for third-party alternatives like Github or Splunk, with everything easily manageable through a new toolchain management experience in Jira.

My role
I led content strategy from concept to launch, shaping how Open DevOps was positioned, adopted, and grown. I drove early research and internal alignment, interviewing over 100 prospective and existing customers. I wrote end-to-end content for bundle signup, project upgrades, and tool discovery, install, and management. I also created the initial launch assets including landing pages, support docs, and buyer guides.
Project Highlights
-
Launch content
Wrote initial content for landing page, buyer guides, signup flows, and technical docs to introduce Open DevOps to the world.
-
Upgrade flows
Redesigned project creation flows so customers could connect to external tools securely and seamlessly, even in complex org setups.
-
Onboarding journey
Built a modular onboarding experience tailored to user roles and permission levels, reducing friction and helping teams get started faster.
-
Toolchain settings
Created a centralized page in Jira where authorized admin users can discover, install, and manage tool integrations with ease.
Impact
At its peak, Open DevOps reached over 50,000 sites and 6,500 customers. While the program has been sunset, my team laid the foundation for Atlassian's current strategy around third-party integrations, now a critical lever in our ability to win in enterprise AI. This foundational work continues to inform how we approach extensibility, flexibility, and customization today.
